Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) commemorated the World Environment Day by holding a plantation drive and promoting organic farming.
Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL), Angul observed World Environment Day 2013 with an objective to raise awareness about environment protection and promote positive environmental action among its employees and people from periphery villages. A marathon was flagged off by Mr. DK Saraogi, Executive Director, where more than 500 employees, their family members and local community participated. More than 500 saplings were planted at different locations of the project area in a plantation drive led by Mr. Saraogi.

“With rising pollution level across the globe it is critical that we practice positive environment practice for our future generations. JSPL, Angul as a part of its design is committed towards protecting our environment and conserving resources. We have installed state of the art technology and control system to reduce environmental pollution,” said Mr. DK Saraogi, reiterating JSPL’s commitment for environment protection.

In another programme, the CSR Department of JSPL organized an “On Field Scientist-Farmers Meet” at Jarasingha to promote vermi-composting and environment friendly horticulture among the villages. Mr. Banaja Lochan Sahoo, Deputy Director (Horticulture) inaugurated the programme in presence of Mr. Prashant Kumar Hota, VP (CSR & CC), Gagan Bihari Pradhan, President of Jarasingha Village Committee and Mr. Rudra Mohan Das, Secretary of Jarasingha Village Committee.

“Practice of organic farming with vermi compost will help in improving soil moisture as well as maintaining environmental balances. JSPL as an industry always makes attempts to support farmers to improve agricultural productivity and their income, enhancing their quality of life,” said Mr. Prashant Kumar Hota, VP (CSR and CC) of JSPL. Leading farmers were given kit for vermi compost unit.

Farmers from Bedasar, Jarasingha and Majhika village attended the programme and interacted on various issues related to vermi-composting, organic farming and soil maintenance etc with horticulture experts. Mr. Prafulla Swain, Asst Director (Horticulture), and Mr. Kishore Chandra Parida, Asst. Agricultural Engineer answered various queries from the farmers. The experts also demonstrated on how to make the vermi compost unit. A progressive farmer of the locality Mr. Magata Pradhan , shared his experience of vermi-compost and organic farming.

At the plant, the environment management department also organized Slogan Competition and Quiz competition among various department of the company. The winners of the competitions were given prizes by Mr. Saraogi at the end of the ‘Marathon Run’. Among others Mrs. Sujata Saraogi, President, Jindal Mahila Samiti; Mr. John Julian, VP (Environment & Safety), Mr. SK Agarwal, Sr. Vice President (Commercial), Capt. Ajit Singh, Chief Security Officer and Mr. BK Pattasahani, GM (Admin) were present on the occasion.
