Mondelez International which owns big chocolate brands like Cadbury, Toblerone and Oreo has launched a sustainability programme which will ensure its cocoa bean sourcing is more transparent and farmer-friendly.
Chicago-headquartered global snacks company Mondelez International has launched a sustainability program in Indonesia that will make cocoa bean sourcing more transparent, improve cocoa bean quality, and enhance farmer productivity. The new programme in Indonesia follows similar programmes already running in other cocoa producing countries such as Ghana, Dominican Republic, Cote d’Ivoire and India.
The chocolate-centered CSR program in Indonesia, called Cocoa Life Indonesia, is aimed at supporting farmers to cultivate environmentally friendly cocoa beans using innovative farming techniques such as optimum planting density and seedling nurseries. The company has made a 10-year commitment worth $400 million towards Cocoa Life Indonesia. The programme will make chocolates more eco-conscious.
Mondelez owns renowned global brands such as Cadbury, Toblerone and Oreo. In Indonesia, the company will partner with the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute (ICCRI) and international cocoa suppliers Armajaro and Olam. The partnership will help promote sustainable cocoa farming practices in Indonesia.
Mondelez and its partners will provide their expertise in farming and processing, which will include new techniques to improve both productivity and income of the farmers. The priority of the programme will be to develop the rural communities to provide farmers with a better way of life. An estimated 50,000 farmers are projected to benefit from the Cocoa Life programme in Indonesia.
The program will include community meetings where families can discuss their needs and priorities. Community action plans will be formulated to help in the expansion of farmer field schools, improved access to farming tools, new roads and better schools. Cocoa Life aims to make the community sustainable by empowering the youth with better education and farming training. The programme will help consolidate Indonesia’s position as a leading producer of sustainable cocoa.
